20 Things To Do In Your 20’s That Your Future Self Will Thank You For

2o things to do in your 20s
Fast forward to the future, have you ever asked yourself what regrets will have when you grow old? If there are things you would want to do today to avoid those regrets in the future, what would they be? Through reflecting on these questions, we realize the significance of every decision we make today- they will determine whether we will live the future in joy or in dreadful regrets.

The FUTURE might seem so far away from now, but maybe not, time flies so fast we don’t even notice it. So, let us try to evaluate and answer these questions- imagine our older self looking back into the past recalling the earlier days of our existence.

To serve as a suggestion as well as a reminder to everyone, here are 20 important things to do in your 20s that your future self will thank you for.

1. Move out of your comfort zone. Aim High
It is said that most people fail in life not because they Aim Too High and Miss, it is because they aim too low and Hit. Worse is that most people right now don’t bother aiming at all. If you know you are comfortable with where you are in the moment, challenge yourself to aim higher. Your comfort is a sign of another room for growth so make use of it and achieve the best you can be.

 2. Do what makes you happy
Many times people look at money as the main criteria when choosing a career or a job. According to many testimonies, the most terrible regrets that people have on their deathbeds is not about being more rich and powerful, but rather not being able to do what could have made them happier. Don’t wait until it is too late to do what you love. Even if it seems hard or unreasonable, you will be glad you made that decision someday.

3. Volunteer for a cause
Whatever advocacy you have in mind, always remember that as you grow older, it is less likely that you will have a time to be involved. So while you have time and while your body is strong enough to go out and reach out to those who are in need, go do it! This will be one of the most precious memories you will have that you can tell to your kids.

4. Avoid the “naysayers”
It is not wise to allow other people’s opinion to control your life. It is your life and not theirs, so whatever they think about you and what you are doing doesn’t matter. Most people who don’t have anything better to do will do everything just so you will remain the same as them. So when you try for yourself to get out there and accomplish greater heights, they will throw all sorts of pessimism to kill your spirit.

 5. Seize every opportunity (Carpe Diem)
We only have one life here on earth. So whatever chance you get to do what you think is relevant be it for the family, for yourself and for the community, make sure to grab and make use of it. Someday, when you are sitting on a rocking chair reminiscing the past, you will be comforted that you did made the most out of the one lifetime given to you.

6. Be confident of yourself at all times
Being confident is a gesture of respect to your own self. In the midst of your differences compared to others, believing on yourself enables you to stand out among the rest. While they conform to a standard dictated by the society, you know that you have your own set of values which does not require to be in line with theirs. Being successful in life is all about having the proper belief system of who you are, truly believing in yourself even if others do not.

7. Face your fears
Always remember that fear is only in the mind. It is thinking of something which does not even exist. Many people get paralyzed by fear and as a result, they stay where they are and fail to grow.  Conquer your fears and your opportunities will become much greater. Fear is a chain that holds you back from reaching your full potential.

8. Embrace hardships
What is more significant about going through hardships is not about overcoming but the life-changing effects it has on us. The new person that we become, the refined character that we build, the courage that we develop and the faith that we manifest. It is something that the next time we get up in the morning, we see a different kind of person equipped with a stronger spirit. So that when you go through hardships again, you are no longer afraid because you know that you have what it takes to overcome whatever life throws at you

  9. Tell and show your parents  how you love them
The time your parents are healthy is the best time to make them feel you love them. Not when they can no longer hear what you are saying,  see how you care for them and feel how you love them.  Keep in mind how the past 20 years felt like it was just yesterday- time does not wait for anyone else.

10. Move on from the pains of the past
Things that happened in the past are meant to teach us lessons not to hold us back. If we put  the right perspective on the past, we will see many learnings that will be useful as we live along. Allowing the past to take charge on your present and future is a sure losing game. What happened to you is one thing, but what you are going to do about what happened is everything.

11. Save, invest and then spend
One of the mistakes of this generation about finances is thinking that saving is secondary to spending. Experts emphasize the rule of Saving first and then Spending what is left. You must learn to live within your means so you can avoid financial difficulties later on. Saving  while you are young will be most beneficial when you get older since time is a great friend for your saved money. When you have acquired enough savings that includes an emergency fund, you can also start exploring ways to invest a portion of that amount. Investing in different platforms such as stocks, mutual funds, real estate and etc. will give your money more potential for growth.

12. Work efficiently
Evaluate the time you spend at work. If you are spending most of your time into it, better plan on how to work efficiently. Investing too much time in your work means you are compromising on other more important things such as your family, relationships and even yourself. Remember to put first things first.

13. Don’t give up on your dreams
Every dream that you have is there for a reason. You were specifically chosen to give them life. You will definitely fail along the way as you work on your dreams and you have 2 choices, Give up and push through. If you give up, do you think you are ever going to reach your dream? Of course No!  But If you continue to push through no matter what, at least you know you still have a chance to make that dream come true.

 14.  Avoid Vices
You might have acquired some during your earlier years and that is somehow understandable. You were so young that time incapable of paying attention to the consequences of your choices. But now that you are in the right age to be fully aware of your actions, you might want to begin erasing whatever unhealthy habits you developed. Surely, you don’t want to be spending all your hard-earned money for hospitalization when you grow older.

 15. Eat and live healthy
You only have one body. For the next 50 or 60 years, you will be using that same body you have right now. So you better take good care of it at this point in time so it can endure longer. You don’t want that by the time you retire, you can’t do anything due to your failing body.

16. Travel to see the outside world
As time goes by, your priorities change as well. After 10 years or so, you are no longer thinking of yourself alone. So while you are in your 20s and you have all the energy and the time, go and explore what is out there! Travelling will broaden your understanding of many things.

17. Read Read  Read!!
Your 20s is a crucial stage for learning. When you were in college, the books you read are only limited to what the curriculum dictates. But now, you are more free to discover many things that you are interested in. Read as many books as you can and look at it as a way of  investing into yourself. There are things you better know now and need later than need later then know.

 18. Be good at one sport
Aside from being an exercise, sports is one good alternative for stress relief. Also when you retire, you don’t want to just stay at home when you have free time. Going out, doing any activity you enjoy will be so much more fun.

19. Avoid debt
As much as possible, never ever get into debt unless it becomes a major necessity. If the resources are scarce, borrowing money to compensate the lack should not be an option. Try to adjust your spending and your lifestyle to fit the resources at hand. Falling into debt is stressful predicament you don’t want to be into. Hence it should be minimized if not avoided.

 20. Admit that you can’t do everything so calm down and take it easy

After all, we are only human, we can only do as much. Many times, things go wrong- not the way we expected them to be. That is ok, we can’t control every single thing in our lives. When we go through difficulties, we can identify them as either a “problem” or a “situation”. Problems do have solutions which we can work on, but there are instances when we can’t do anything other than just let it go, those are “situations”.
