Why Personal Development Is More Important Than Chasing Success

Personal Development
During his famous talk about “The Strangest Secrets”, the “Dean of Personal Development” Earl Nightingale said “if you are to ask 100 young people age 25  about their life goals, all of them want to be successful. But by the time they reach age 65, only 1 will become successful, 4 will become financially independent , 5 will still be working while 54 will be broke.”

Given that all of us want to succeed in life, why is it that only a few make it? I believe this has nothing to do with the predicament of a person. We’ve seen countless individuals succeed in their chosen fields despite going through unimaginable life challenges. People fail in life not because of what they have or don’t have but because of the mentality they possess.

We all share the same fascination towards success. As a matter of fact, we do not just want it, we need it! We need to succeed in our endeavors to be fulfilled about life. But at this early stage of our lives, should we be too concerned about SUCCESS? Or is there something more important that we should pursue before anything else? I would like to share a few reasons why as a young dreamer, personal development is way more important than chasing success.

1. Personal development is the foundation of every success
Personal development is a process by which a person builds his character and harnesses his talents to achieve his full potential. Without these, it would be impossible for anybody to succeed in whatever he does.  Like a builder spending the most resources on the foundation of the structure before putting up the skyscraper, it applies to our lives as well. Before there is success, there should be a person who is empowered, completely self-aware and purpose driven- all achieved in the process called personal development.

2. Success is never permanent
Even the most successful people we look up to today experience failure many times! This proves the idea that there is no such thing as permanent success. No matter how rich or powerful you become in the future, 100% you will have to go through disappointments and failures. So, the challenge really is to not to be successful alone but to be able to handle any kind of situation that life throws at you. This is a special skill acquired through committed personal development. Personal development teaches many things such as confidence, resilience, personal and interpersonal skills which are useful in adapting to any kind of circumstance.

 3. Investing on yourself is a huge success in itself
What you build and earn can be lost, but the personality you develop will be yours as long as you live, it can never be taken away from you. It is an asset more important than any possession or status.

It is not bad to aspire for success but we must understand there are things more significant. Pursuing success can lead to uncertain results, but pursuing personal development is the certain path towards a meaningful, successful and happy life.
