5 useful hacks that can make your battery survive longer

One of the most prominent problems every gadget owner encounters is declining battery life. Over a period of time of usage, battery life deteriorates due to so many causes. Most of these causes are caused by bad usage habits we develop over time. Here are 5 hacks that will surely make you battery survive longer.

1. Do not expose your devices to extreme temperature
The more the battery is exposed to extreme temperature, the faster chemical reactions will occur. High temperatures can therefore provide increased performance, but at the same time the rate of the unwanted chemical reactions will increase resulting in a corresponding loss of battery life. Tests have shown that the self-discharge rate of a battery doubles with each 10°C increase in temperature.

2.Do not overcharge
Although some devices have the capability to stop charging as soon as the battery gets full, most of the available devices does not have such. Overcharging results to battery heating, bloating and worst case, explosion especially if you are using a non-suggested charger which we can’t avoid sometimes when we forget or lose  our charger.

3. Use manufacturer’s preferred charger
Every battery has its own current and voltage rating. Using a charger that does not fit those ratings is dangerous for your device. It is highly recommended that you use your manufacturer’s charger for your safety and for longer use of your gadget.

4. Minimize using your device while charging
A lot of times we can’t help ourselves from using our devices continuously. We have built the habit of using our devices even during charging. This is not advisable for the battery because it will take longer for it to fully charge than normal. The longer it is plugged, the hotter it gets which has bad effects for your battery life. Control yourself from using for a few hours so that you can enjoy your device for several months longer.

5. Make it a habit to drain your battery once a week and then fully charge afterwards (Nickel Cadmium batteries)
There are two types of batteries commonly used today, Nickel cadmium and the more recent Lithium Ion. Nickel-cadmium batteries are  subject to  “memory effect”. If  they weren’t allowed to discharge all the way before being recharged they would eventually “remember” the level of charge they fell to before recharging and act as if they were completely drained every time their charge decreased to that level. But the Lithium Ion ones behave much better. They can be charged anytime and you will not worry about the “memory effect”.
