Keys to Preparing a Great Speech

Speech writing seems challenging at first. But actually, you
can easily do it if you follow a particular process that breaks down the task
into simpler ones that you can easily do one by one. This 8-step process has
been effective for me and I hope it works for you as well.
1. Identify your specific
subject
Of course this is the very first thing you should don before
writing a speech. You should be able to specifically identify a topic that is
not so broad. Knowing the topic exactly gives clarity to the message therefore
it is so much easier for the audience to absorb the message you want to relay.
2. Research thoroughly
about the subject
After knowing the subject clearly, you should engage into a
deep research about the important data that lies within the subject. The
research must be Deep because you can’t afford to step into the stage and tell
your audience about things that are not new to them. You have to be able to
present ideas that will make them think and disturb their present mindset. An
audience that is not disturbed will not return any interaction at all.
3. Create an outline
The next thing to do after gathering enough information is to
create an outline that will tell you which areas you will be discussing. For
sure, given a time limit, you can’t discuss everything about your topic that’s
why you need to just pick the relevant ones and summarize it in an outline.
4. Divide your message
into 2 to 4 points
Like I said, you don’t have to feed everything to the audience.
Make it sure that you divide the message into a minimum of two and a maximum of
four points. Too much information will be exhausting and very few on the other
hand will be boring for them.
5. Write everything down
Don’t think too much as you brainstorm ideas. Just write down everything that comes into your mind. You
don’t have to edit at first. There are some ideas that fades away very fast so
you have to write it down immediately as soon as it pops up in your head.
6. Create the first draft
The outline gives you direction as you create your first
draft. This will save you time. Remember! A great speech is a product of, many
revisions so you might want to tell yourself this should not be your final
piece. Be willing to go through 5 or more drafts so you can be confident that
your speech will be impactful to the audience. See to it that you focus on the
outline and always ask yourself how your ideas relate to the main topic.
7. Read your draft aloud
Read you draft aloud so you will know which parts does not
sound good, hard to pronounce, repetitive, erroneous and etc. Reading silently
is different from reading aloud. Reading aloud is always better. This will also
help you memorize the piece much faster.
8. Revise
Now that you read the speech allowed, you should be able to
see the errors you made. Correct them on the following revision. Repeat the
last two steps until you are comfortable delivering the message and you feel
its complete relevance to the subject. It’s ok to keep on revising. You will
feel good delivering it on stage because you know you have gone through it many
times already.
